Program Philosophy This program for gifted and talented students will provide opportunities that broaden and extend the learning process. This is an enrichment program where learning will be enhanced by offering meaningful lessons, tasks, and experiences differentiated by content, process, and product.
Program Goals The primary goals for this program are to promote higher level thinking, creativity, logical reasoning, communication, leadership, and social-behavioral development through in-depth content and problem-based learning. These skills will be demonstrated by a variety of products and/or performances.
This program will also help gifted students to develop a love for lifelong learning by providing opportunities to “learn how to learn,” which requires organization and study skills, along with perseverance in the face of difficulty. It will also provide students with the opportunity to learn alongside intellectual peers, so that they might gain a realistic appraisal of their own abilities. Students may be referred and tested beginning in second grade. Students may qualify for the C.A.T.S. program with a score in the 97th%tile or above in at least one of the three domains on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), or in the 93rd%tile in at least two of the domains. This test is administered by the C.A.T.S. teacher in October and again in March to recommended students in 2nd - 6th grades for gifted services. Qualifying test scores from other gifted programs may qualify transferring students for the Flowing Wells gifted program, or C.A.T.S.
